Give an example of an abstract machine, for example, a cheese-making machine. Then ask participants to create a machine with their bodies.
- One at a time, enter the space and perform a repetitive physical and vocal gesture based on the prompt.
- Others join in with a new sound and gesture until everyone becomes part of the machine.
Notes: This exercise helps participants identify how society is made up of structures. The machine is a simple example of how without one part – the machine doesn’t work. For example, without education, the workforce cannot grow.
