003 – What Is / It Is

  1. Distribute sticky notes – each person receives two in different colours (e.g. one blue and one green). One note should say ‘What is…’, and the other, ‘It is…
  2. Think of themes relevant to your project and to write a word that is intangible (e.g. love, home, hope, etc.) on the ‘What is…’ sticky note.
  3. Exchange these notes with someone else.
  4. On your ‘It is…’ sticky note, write your answer to the ‘What is [word]’ question that you have received in the exchange.
  5. Return the What is notes in one pile to the instructor and the It is. in another pile.
  6. The instructor will mix the notes up and read one ‘What is…’ and one (unassociated)  ‘It is…’ note at a time. It is interesting how some unassociated answers are quite profound in describing the concept.

Examples:

WHAT IS …

IT IS …

Death

… a journey, live and learn

Willpower

… human nature

Love

… when an organism’s life force stops

Family

… a union of ideas and ethos

Notes: The objective of this exercise is to start a conversation and find new ways of describing various viewpoints. Participants can discuss whether they agree or disagree with the pairings.
